Dear Abolish Frontex supporters,
In 2006 Frontex deployed Hera, its first joint operation outside Europe, in an attempt to stop migration from Senegal to the Spanish Canary Islands. This made an already dangerous journey even more difficult and included the involvement in illegal pushbacks. Since then, the EU has doubled down on its endeavor to turn African countries into EU border outposts and stop migrants before they even have a chance to claim asylum. In 2023, Frontex had liason officers stationed in 3 West African countries, was negotiating status agreements (that would enable Frontex missions on the ground) with 2 of them – Senegal and Mauritania –, and had set up ‘risk analysis cells’ in 8. And that’s only what we know of, since Frontex makes an effort to keep this kind of information secret from the public.
The externalisation of EU borders to African countries has led to preventable deaths and immense suffering. In Libya, Frontex cooperates with militias that force migrants into detention centres notorious for severe human rights violations including slavery and sexual abuse. In Northern Niger, the EU helped draft a law that illegalised regional migration, leading to the deaths of thousands of people in the desert and destroying the traditional transport economy. In Tunisia, the EU wants to pay a racist autocrat to crack down on migration, which means deporting people to the desert where they die from heat and thirst. While Israel is bombing Gaza, the EU’s biggest worry is not how to protect Palestinians from genocide and war crimes, but how to keep them away from EU borders in the unlikely case they manage to escape their open-air prison. For that purpose, the EU now seeks to replicate its Tunisia deal with Egypt.
Under EU pressure, and with money and equipment donated by the EU and its member states, African countries reinforce and militarise borders that were once drawn by colonial powers eager to extract the continent’s riches. The ruthless exploitation of natural resources and human labour continues to today and is one of the root causes that forces people to flee their homes in the first place. Others are the Western support of authoritarian regimes, arms exports, unfair trade agreements and debt burdens, and the consequences of climate change: Man-made crises that could be tackled if only the political will existed.
This 18 December, International Migrants Day, we will draw attention to the havoc wreaked on African countries by the EU’s obsession with stopping migration. And we want to advocate for a different vision, one that has long been practiced by many communities on the African continent: freedom of movement, solidarity, the idea that mobility and migration are natural, that they are a solution and not a problem.
For our next International Action Day we invite you and your local groups to organise against Frontex and the EU’s murderous border regime on or around the 18th of December. You are also invited to integrate our demand to #AbolishFrontex into actions you are already planning.

Frontex raus aus Afrika! Macht mit bei unserem internationalen Aktionstag am 18.12.2023
Liebe Unterstützer*innen von Abolish Frontex,
2006 startete Frontex Hera, die erste gemeinsame Operation außerhalb Europas, um die Migration vom Senegal zu den Kanarischen Inseln in Spanien zu stoppen. Dadurch wurde eine ohnehin schon gefährliche Reise zusätzlich erschwert und es fanden illegale Pushbacks statt. Seitdem hat die EU ihr Bestreben, afrikanische Länder in EU-Grenzposten zu verwandeln und Migrant*innen zu stoppen, bevor sie überhaupt einen Asylantrag stellen können, weiter vorangetrieben. Im Jahr 2023 hat Frontex Verbindungsbeamte in drei westafrikanischen Ländern stationiert, verhandelt mit zwei dieser Länder – Senegal und Mauretanien – über Statusabkommen (die Frontex-Missionen vor Ort ermöglichen würden) und hat in acht Ländern “Risikoanalysezellen” eingerichtet. Und dies ist nur das, was wir wissen, da Frontex sich bemüht, derartige Informationen vor der Öffentlichkeit geheim zu halten.
Die Auslagerung der EU-Grenzen in afrikanische Länder hat zahlreiche Todesfälle und unermessliches Leid zur Folge. In Libyen arbeitet Frontex mit Milizen zusammen, die Migrant*innen in Lagern einsperren, in denen schwere Menschenrechtsverletzungen wie Sklaverei und sexueller Missbrauch an der Tagesordnung sind. Im Norden Nigers half die EU bei der Ausarbeitung eines Gesetzes, das regionale Migration kriminalisierte, was zum Tod Tausender von Menschen in der Wüste führte und die traditionelle Transportwirtschaft zerstörte. In Tunesien will die EU einen rassistischen Autokraten bezahlen, um gegen Migration vorzugehen, was bedeutet, dass Menschen in die Wüste abgeschoben werden, wo sie an Hitze und Durst sterben. Während Israel den Gazastreifen bombardiert, ist die größte Sorge der EU nicht, die Palästinenser*innen vor Völkermord und Kriegsverbrechen zu schützen, sondern sie von den EU-Grenzen fernzuhalten, falls sie aus ihrem Open-Air-Gefängnis entkommen können. Zu diesem Zweck versucht die EU nun, ihr Tunesien-Abkommen in Ägypten zu kopieren.
Unter dem Druck der EU und mit von der Union und ihren Mitgliedern gespendeten Geldern und Ausrüstung verstärken und militarisieren afrikanische Länder die Grenzen, die einst von Kolonialmächten gezogen wurden, die die Reichtümer des Kontinents ausbeuten wollten. Die rücksichtslose Ausbeutung von Bodenschätzen und menschlicher Arbeitskraft hält bis heute an und ist eine der Hauptursachen dafür, dass Menschen überhaupt aus ihrer Heimat fliehen müssen. Andere sind die westliche Unterstützung autoritärer Regime, Waffenexporte, unfaire Handelsabkommen und eine hohe Schuldenlast sowie die Folgen des Klimawandels: Menschengemachte Krisen, die bewältigt werden könnten, wenn nur der politische Wille vorhanden wäre.
Am 18. Dezember, dem Internationalen Tag der Migrant*innen, wollen wir zeigen, was für verheerende Folgen die Besessenheit der EU mit Migrationskontrolle für afrikanische Länder hat. Und wir wollen uns für eine andere Vision einsetzen, die von vielen Gemeinschaften auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent seit langem praktiziert wird: Freizügigkeit, Solidarität, die Idee, dass Mobilität und Migration selbstverständlich sind, dass sie eine Lösung und kein Problem darstellen.
Für unseren nächsten internationalen Aktionstag laden wir euch und eure lokalen Gruppen ein, am oder um den 18. Dezember herum Aktionen gegen Frontex und das mörderische Grenzregime der EU zu organisieren. Ihr seid auch eingeladen, unsere Forderung #AbolishFrontex in Aktionen zu integrieren, die ihr bereits geplant habt.

Nel 2006 Frontex ha lanciato Hera, la sua prima operazione congiunta fuori dall’Europa, nel tentativo di fermare la migrazione dal Senegal alle Isole Canarie spagnole. Ciò ha reso ancora più difficile un viaggio già pericoloso e ha comportato il coinvolgimento in respingimenti illegali. Da allora, l’UE ha raddoppiato i suoi sforzi per trasformare i paesi africani in avamposti di frontiera dell’UE e fermare i migranti prima ancora che abbiano la possibilità di chiedere asilo. Nel 2023, Frontex aveva ufficiali di collegamento di stanza in 3 paesi dell’Africa occidentale, stava negoziando accordi sullo status (che avrebbero consentito missioni Frontex sul campo) con 2 di loro – Senegal e Mauritania – e aveva istituito “cellule di analisi dei rischi” in 8 paesi. E questo è solo ciò che sappiamo, dal momento che Frontex si sforza di mantenere questo tipo di informazioni segrete al pubblico.
L’esternalizzazione dei confini dell’UE ai paesi africani ha portato a morti prevenibili e a immense sofferenze. In Libia, Frontex collabora con le milizie che costringono i migranti in centri di detenzione noti per gravi violazioni dei diritti umani, tra cui schiavitù e abusi sessuali. Nel Niger settentrionale, l’UE ha contribuito alla stesura di una legge che illegalizzava la migrazione regionale, provocando la morte di migliaia di persone nel deserto e distruggendo la tradizionale economia dei trasporti. In Tunisia, l’UE vuole pagare un autocrate razzista per reprimere le migrazioni, il che significa deportare le persone nel deserto dove muoiono di caldo e sete. Mentre Israele bombarda Gaza, la preoccupazione più grande dell’UE non è come proteggere i palestinesi dal genocidio e dai crimini di guerra, ma come tenerli lontani dai confini dell’UE nel caso improbabile che riescano a scappare dalla loro prigione a cielo aperto. A tal fine, l’UE ora cerca di replicare il suo accordo con la Tunisia e l’Egitto.
Sotto la pressione dell’UE, e con denaro e attrezzature donati dall’UE e dai suoi stati membri, i paesi africani rafforzano e militarizzano i confini che un tempo venivano tracciati dalle potenze coloniali desiderose di estrarre le ricchezze del continente. Lo sfruttamento spietato delle risorse naturali e del lavoro umano continua ancora oggi ed è una delle cause profonde che costringe le persone a fuggire dalle proprie case. Altri sono il sostegno occidentale a regimi autoritari, esportazioni di armi, accordi commerciali ingiusti e oneri del debito, e le conseguenze del cambiamento climatico: crisi provocate dall’uomo che potrebbero essere affrontate se solo esistesse la volontà politica.
Questo 18 dicembre, Giornata internazionale dei migranti, attireremo l’attenzione sul caos provocato nei paesi africani dall’ossessione dell’UE di fermare l’immigrazione. E vogliamo sostenere una visione diversa, praticata da tempo da molte comunità del continente africano: libertà di movimento, solidarietà, l’idea che la mobilità e la migrazione siano naturali, che siano una soluzione e non un problema.
Per la nostra prossima Giornata d’Azione Internazionale invitiamo voi e i vostri gruppi locali ad organizzarvi contro Frontex e il regime omicida di frontiera dell’UE il prossimo 18 dicembre. Siete inoltre invitati ad inserire l’obiettivo della campagna #AbolishFrontex nelle azioni che state già pianificando.

En 2006, Frontex a déployé Hera, sa première opération conjointe en dehors de l’Europe, pour tenter d’arrêter la migration du Sénégal vers les îles espagnoles des Canaries. Cette opération a rendu un voyage déjà dangereux encore plus difficile et a impliqué des refoulements illégaux. Depuis lors, l’UE a redoublé d’efforts pour transformer les pays africains en avant-postes frontaliers de l’UE et arrêter les migrants avant même qu’ils n’aient la possibilité de demander l’asile. En 2023, Frontex a des officiers de liaison stationnés dans trois pays d’Afrique de l’Ouest, négocie des accords de statut (qui permettraient des missions de Frontex sur le terrain) avec deux d’entre eux – le Sénégal et la Mauritanie – et a mis en place des “cellules d’analyse des risques” dans huit pays. Et ce n’est que ce que dont nous sommes informés, car Frontex s’efforce de garder ce genre d’informations secrètes.
L’externalisation des frontières de l’UE vers les pays africains a entraîné des décès évitables et d’immenses souffrances. En Libye, Frontex coopère avec des milices qui forcent les personnes en migration à entrer dans des centres de détention connus pour leurs graves violations des droits humains, notamment l’esclavage et les abus sexuels. Dans le nord du Niger, l’UE a contribué à l’élaboration d’une loi qui a rendu illégales les migrations régionales, entraînant la mort de milliers de personnes dans le désert et détruisant l’économie traditionnelle du transport. En Tunisie, l’UE veut payer un autocrate raciste pour qu’il réprime l’immigration, ce qui signifie déporter les gens dans le désert où ils meurent de chaleur et de soif. Alors qu’Israël bombarde Gaza, la principale préoccupation de l’UE n’est pas de protéger les Palestiniens du génocide et des crimes de guerre, mais de les tenir à l’écart des frontières de l’UE dans le cas improbable où ils parviendraient à s’échapper de leur prison à ciel ouvert. À cette fin, l’UE cherche maintenant à reproduire l’accord qu’elle a conclu avec l’Égypte à propos de la Tunisie.
Sous la pression de l’UE, et avec l’argent et l’équipement offerts par l’UE et ses États membres, les pays africains renforcent et militarisent les frontières autrefois tracées par les puissances coloniales désireuses d’extraire les richesses du continent. L’exploitation impitoyable des ressources naturelles et du travail humain se poursuit encore aujourd’hui et constitue l’une des causes profondes qui poussent les gens à fuir leur foyer. D’autres causes sont le soutien occidental aux régimes autoritaires, les exportations d’armes, les accords commerciaux injustes et le fardeau de la dette, ainsi que les conséquences du changement climatique : Des crises provoquées par l’homme qui pourraient être résolues si seulement la volonté politique existait.
Ce 18 décembre, à l’occasion de la Journée internationale des migrants, nous attirerons l’attention sur les ravages causés aux pays africains par l’obsession de l’UE à stopper les migrations. Et nous voulons plaider pour une autre vision, celle qui est pratiquée depuis longtemps par de nombreuses communautés sur le continent africain : la liberté de circulation, la solidarité, l’idée que la mobilité et la migration sont naturelles, qu’elles sont une solution et non un problème.
Pour notre prochaine journée d’action internationale, nous vous invitons, vous et vos groupes locaux, à vous organiser contre Frontex et le régime frontalier meurtrier de l’UE le 18 décembre ou autour de cette date. في يوم التجمع والاحتجاج الدولي القادم، ندعوكم ومجموعاتكم المحلية إلى التنظيم ضد فرونتكس ونظام الحدود القاتل للاتحاد الأوروبي في الثامن عشر من ديسمبر/كانون الأول أو أي وقت قريب منه. الكل مدعو أيضًا لدمج مطالبتنا بـ #AbolishFrontex في الفعاليات التي تخططون لها بالفعل.
