6 March 2023 – Abolish Frontex, a grassroots network of over 130 groups and organisations aiming to abolish the EU border guard agency and to end the EU border regime, releases the following statement regarding the recent deaths of people on the move, the Italian government clampdown on rescue ships and its reaction to the shipwreck disaster.

‘The 69 coffins lined up in the Crotone sports hall, 33 missing who could turn out to reach the number of 50 people, is the tragic balance of an announced disaster. It is the last shipwreck that occurred in Crotone in Calabria, February 26. A programmed disaster, resulting from the anti-migration policies of Italy and of the whole of Europe.
The first act of the new right-wing Italian government was the declaration of war on migrants, with the notorious “Piantedosi-NGO decree”. This decree obliges the NGOs to return to the port as soon as a first rescue is done and the government assigns a safe harbor as far away as possible, to many days of navigation from the recovery of the shipwrecked people, emptying the Mediterranean Sea from the presence of the civilian search and rescue fleet. They also sanctioned the Geo Barents vessel of MSF (Doctors without Borders) with 20 days of seizure and a €10’000 fine, for daring to make two rescues before returning to the port.
Abolish Frontex strongly condemns the murderous European migration policies, the cowardly barbarism against the helpless who seek to escape wars, violence, famine, absolute poverty, caused by the neocolonial robbery policies of the so-called developed countries. East and West united in exploitation, corruption, fomenting wars, which push millions of human beings into forced migration.
The European Union, which has assigned to Frontex the leading role in this war against migrants, the Italian government which has abandoned to their fate those who risk their lives, being forced to turn to traffickers to try their luck, are morally and materially responsible for these deaths.
The role of Frontex in this shipwreck
It all started at 11.05 pm on Saturday 25 February 2023, when an aircraft of Frontex (The European Border and Coast Guard Agency) spotted the migrant boat. Its dispatch to the Italian Coast Guard and the Guardia di Finanza speaks of ‘unit sailing regularly, at 6 knots, in good buoyancy conditions, with only one person visible on deck’. It remains to be understood why, despite the device’s thermal instruments detecting the presence of numerous people crowded into the hold, the danger they ran was not clearly signaled.
It remains to be understood why, despite the area being alerted by stormy and worsening seas, they limited themselves to giving the position of the vessel and returning without checking if it needed help.
Unless this non-alert is part of Frontex’s general policy. Indeed, when Frontex detects a boat off the Libyan coast, its role is clear: to alert the Libyan coast guard (paid by the Italian government thanks to the famous Memorandum of Understanding) so that the pullback to Libya can take place as soon as possible. When a boat is spotted near the Maltese or Italian coast, Frontex’s role is less clear: to save or to let it go to the extreme?
In both cases, we are witnessing the application of the death regime at the borders that Italy and the whole of the EU have coldly decided to apply to migrants.
The fault of the Italian authorities
From that moment on, the responsibility for non-rescue passes to the Italian authorities. They have decided not to open a SAR procedure, i.e. not to send Coast Guard patrol boats, equipped for the sea in bad conditions, but two units of the Finance Police, for a police operation. THEY HAVE CHOSEN THE CONTROL AND NOT THE RESCUE. This is the criminal reality.
This sinking 150 metres from the beach outraged anti-racist people and the whole Italian social movement. Countless demonstrations have taken place all over Italy, demanding truth and justice for the victims and the resignation of the responsible ministers (Piantedosi and Salvini). They are expected to converge in a major national demonstration.
Abolish Frontex, convinced that the system cannot be improved, and that Frontex should be abolished and the borders opened, strongly supports the protests in Italy and proposes to its members to organize sit-ins in front of Italian embassies in all European capitals.

Un disastro programmato: Crotone (Calabria – Italia)
‘Le 69 bare allineate nel palazzetto dello sport di Crotone, 33 disperse che potrebbero arrivare a raggiungere il numero di 50 persone, è il tragico bilancio di un disastro annunciato. È l’ultimo naufragio avvenuto a Crotone in Calabria, il 26 febbraio. Un disastro programmato, frutto delle politiche antimigratorie dell’Italia e dell’Europa intera.
Il primo atto del nuovo governo italiano di destra è stata la dichiarazione di guerra ai migranti, con il famigerato “decreto Piantedosi-ONG”. Questo decreto obbliga le Ong a rientrare in porto non appena effettuati il primo soccorso e il governo assegna un porto sicuro per quanto possibile, a tanti giorni di navigazione dal recupero dei naufraghi, svuotando il Mar Mediterraneo dalla presenza della flotta civile di ricerca e soccorso. Hanno anche sanzionato con 20 giorni di sequestro e 10’000 euro di multa la nave Geo Barents di MSF (Medici senza frontiere), per aver osato effettuare 2 soccorsi prima di rientrare in porto.
Abolire Frontex condanna fermamente le micidiali politiche migratorie europee, la codarda barbarie contro gli indifesi che cercano di sfuggire a guerre, violenze, carestie, povertà assoluta, causate dalle politiche di rapina neocoloniali del mondo sviluppato. Oriente e Occidente uniti nello sfruttamento, nella corruzione, nel fomentare guerre, che spingono milioni di esseri umani a migrazioni forzate.
L’Unione Europea, che ha affidato a Frontex il ruolo di protagonista in questa guerra ai migranti, il governo italiano che ha abbandonato al proprio destino chi rischia la vita, costretto a rivolgersi ai trafficanti per tentare la sorte, sono moralmente e materialmente responsabili di queste morti.
Il ruolo di Frontex in questo naufragio
Tutto è iniziato alle 23:05 di sabato 25 febbraio, quando un aereo di Frontex (l’Agenzia europea della guardia di frontiera e costiera) ha avvistato il barcone di migranti. Il suo dispaccio alla Guardia Costiera e alla Guardia di Finanza parla di «<unità che naviga regolarmente, a 6 nodi, in buone condizioni di galleggiamento, con una sola persona visibile in coperta». Resta da capire perché, nonostante gli strumenti termici del dispositivo rilevassero la presenza di numerose persone ammassate nella stiva, il pericolo che correvano non fosse chiaramente segnalato.
Resta da capire perché, nonostante la zona fosse allertata da mare in burrasca e in peggioramento, si siano limitati a dare la posizione del peschereccio e rientrare senza verificare se avesse bisogno di soccorsi.
A meno che questa non allerta non rientri nella politica generale di Frontex. Infatti, quando Frontex rileva un barcone al largo delle coste libiche, il suo ruolo è chiaro: allertare la guardia costiera libica (pagata dal governo italiano grazie al famoso Memorandum of Understanding) affinché il respingimento verso la Libia possa avvenire il prima possibile. Quando una barca viene avvistata vicino alla costa maltese o italiana, il ruolo di Frontex è meno chiaro: salvarla o lasciarla andare all’estremo?
In entrambi i casi, si assiste all’applicazione del regime di morte alle frontiere che l’Italia e l’intera UE hanno freddamente deciso di applicare ai migranti.
Colpa delle autorità italiane
Da quel momento la responsabilità del mancato salvataggio passa alle autorità italiane. Hanno deciso di non aprire una procedura SAR, cioè di non inviare motovedette della Guardia Costiera, attrezzate per il mare in pessime condizioni, ma due unità della Guardia di Finanza, per un’operazione di polizia. HANNO SCELTO IL CONTROLLO E NON IL SALVATAGGIO. Questa è la realtà criminale.
Questo naufragio a 150 metri dalla spiaggia ha indignato gli antirazzisti e tutti gruppi e le associazioni sociali italiane. Innumerevoli manifestazioni si sono svolte in tutta Italia, chiedendo verità e giustizia per le vittime e le dimissioni dei ministri responsabili (Piantedosi e Salvini). È convocata una grande manifestazione nazionale a Crotone.
Abolish Frontex, convinto che il sistema non possa essere migliorato, e che Frontex debba essere abolito e le frontiere aperte, sostiene con forza le proteste in Italia e propone ai suoi membri di organizzare sit-in davanti alle ambasciate italiane in tutte le capitali europee.
